Volunteer Opportunities

Breakfast

Volunteers cook and serve breakfast for our residents Monday – Friday. Volunteers arrive at 6 am, serve at 7 am, and are out by 7:30 am. The food, menus, recipes and supplies are all provided. You don’t even have to clean-up, the residents do that. We especially need help on Thursdays.  On average, we feed 50-55 people each morning. We use disposable plates, cups, napkins, bowls, forks, knives, and spoons, which are donated by individuals, businesses, and churches.

Dinner/ Weekend Breakfast

We currently have over 43 churches and individuals who provide, prepare, and serve dinner each night and breakfast on the weekend.

We’d love for you to join us in serving our community! Here are three meaningful ways to get involved:

Bag Lunches

If you or your organization would like to provide bag lunches for our residents as they leave for the day, it would be greatly appreciated.

Who will you help:

It will help the children in the shelter to take a nutritious lunch to school and the adults to take a lunch to work. These lunches ensure our residents have a mid-day meal, as they often do not get to eat lunch during the day.

Lunch Volunteer
Time Commitment:
  • Shift: 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM
  • Lunch served at 12:00 PM
  • Commit to the same day each week or one–two consistent days per month
What You’ll Do:
  • Arrive by 11:00 AM
  • Choose from pre-prepared food in our cooler (leftovers or donated bag lunches)
  • Decide what to serve & serve lunch to 10–15 residents
  • Help with light cleanup afterward
Who You’ll Help:

Respite residents — individuals who aren’t feeling well, have disabilities, or families who need a safe daytime space. Beyond a meal, you’ll be offering comfort, care, and dignity.

Respite Room Volunteer
Time Commitment:
  • Flexible — weekly is ideal, but monthly or alternating with a friend works too
  • Consistency helps residents build trust and look forward to your visits
What You’ll Do:
  • Be a kind, supportive presence in the Respite Room
  • Chat, listen, or just hang out
  • Help with light activities: puzzles, games, TV
  • Assist with simple tasks like understanding paperwork or using a phone/email
Why It Matters:
Even small gestures can have a huge impact — past volunteers have helped with forms, played board games, and simply provided a listening ear.

Clothing Closet Volunteer
DUE TO THE GENEROSITY FROM OUR COMMUNITY DONATING CLOTHES, WE HAVE MORE THAN WE CAN HANDLE AND ARE UNABLE TO TAKE ANY MORE WOMEN'S & CHILDREN'S CLOTHES UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. WE ARE IN NEED OF MEN'S WORK CLOTHES, NON-SLIP BLACK SNEAKERS, UNDERWEAR & UNDERSHIRTS
Location: Resource Center — Large storage room
Open Hours: Mondays & Fridays, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
What You’ll Do:
  • Greet and check in guests
  • Explain clothing limits
  • Help fold, bag, and tidy items
  • Put out new donations
Why It Matters:
This service provides free essentials like shoes, coats, and seasonal clothing. Your help ensures residents leave with warmth, confidence, and dignity.
Time Commitment:
  • Ideally during Monday and Friday shifts
  • Open to adding new times if you’re interested!

CHILD ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

We invite compassionate volunteers to help support children and families at our local homeless shelter. Volunteers play an important role in creating a safe, engaging, and enriching environment for children during their stay at the shelter.

Opportunities include leading arts and crafts, helping with tutoring and homework, and organizing fun, child-centered enrichment activities that encourage creativity, learning, and connection. Your presence helps provide stability and positive engagement for children during an important time for their families.

We are seeking volunteers who can offer consistent support. We request a commitment of at least 2 hours once a month to a maximum 2 hours once a week.  The schedule can be tailored to your convenience, but will likely be one morning a week or Saturday morning, or Sunday afternoon.  Individuals, community groups, and organizations are all welcome to serve. Please fill out a volunteer application and drop it by the office or you can email it to Kimberly Pontarelli at kpontarelli@greenvillecommunityshelter.org. She will turn them in to Julie who will contact you about a meeting and orientation for this program.

 Why It Matters:

Your time can make a meaningful difference by helping children feel supported, encouraged, and cared for.

Thank you for your interest in helping those who need a hand-up. If you have a project, talent, or interest you would like to share, please contact the shelter at 252-752-0829.
